Soap Lake sundial dedicated

SOAP LAKE — Hot, sunny weather bathed what’s being touted as “The World’s First Human Figure Sundial,” during its dedication in Soap Lake before an estimated 400 people Saturday.

The ceremony at the city’s East Beach Park was a culmination of 15 years of work by volunteers from the Soap Lake Garden Club.

Forget the Lava Lamp ... Sculpture seen as boost to Soap Lake tourism

SOAP LAKE — It's no lava lamp, but Soap Lake finally has a monumental artwork that could spur tourism.

The unveiling Saturday of an immense sundial near the banks of the mineral lake also brought the return of the Colville Confederated Tribes as participants in a Soap Lake event for the first time in 30 years. The 45-foot-diameter dial plate of the sundial features a 15-foot-tall bronze sculpture of an American Indian couple, a woman in the arms of a winged man. The man's outstretched 20-foot wing serves as the gnomon — the sundial's shadow-casting pointer.

Immigrants find comfort and community at Soap Lake

SOAP LAKE, Grant County — Some nonbelievers may roll their eyes at the mention of Soap Lake's reputed healing powers, a gift of geology that left an embarrassment of minerals in its saline waters and underlying black mud.

But don't count Valentin Naidenov, his family and dozens of other immigrants from the former Soviet Union who flock to this oasis south of Grand Coulee Dam each summer, among them.

SOAP LAKE -- For generations, people have thought the salty, foamy water of this seemingly lifeless lake is strange, even otherworldly.

They may be right. The National Science Foundation intends to study the lake to learn about the possibility of life on Mars.
