The Lower Grand Coulee widens as it undulates
southward towards Soap Lake and the last section of vertical basalt
cliffs that rise to meet the rolling hills of the Columbia Basin.
From Soap Lake, the landscape spreads out to the east and west forming
a vast patchwork of shrub steppe habitat punctuated with rolling
dry land wheat farms and irrigated circles covering sections of
once dry land with water from the Columbia Basin Irrigation Project.
Soap Lake is an oasis that attracts the visitor who is looking for
something out-of-the ordinary.
Soap Lake is located on state Highway 17 North, less than a mile
from where it intersects with SR 28. It’s about 120 miles
west of Spokane, Washington and 180 miles east of Seattle. The city
of Soap lake hugs the southern shore of the lake. There are two
public beaches with shaded picnic areas and full service camp and
RV park.
